Coria announces retirement plans

Coria, 27, told Radio Continental that he was no longer playing because he had “lost passion for tennis” and he formally announced his decision on Wednesday in a press conference at the Vilas Club in Buenos Aires.

The 2004 French Open runner-up, who has slipped to 672 in the world rankings, is thinking of playing in his homeland in next year’s ATP Copa Telmex, a tournament he won in 2004.

“I do not rule out anything. I might play (in Buenos Aires) next year. I want to take some days to think what to do. I will obviously not plan a calendar to play the entire year,” he said.

“I was not enjoying tennis. To go on was useless. I’ve been thinking about this for a long time, especially after the tournament in Thailand.

“I did not have that ruthlessness of beating a rival I used to have. To achieve great things, you have to have that instinct to beat your rival.”

He added on TyC Sports cable channel: “I don’t where I will say goodbye, whether it will be a party or on the court or maybe in the Copa Telmex next year. I want to enjoy it and finish this chapter with my friends and my family.”
