Kim Clijsters’ return to Roland Garros next month is in doubt after the US Open champ injured her left foot while on Fed Cup duty.

The former world No.1 could be out for up to six weeks according to Belgian tennis officials after picking up the injury during Belgium’s tie against Estonia.

The incident happened as Clijsters faced Maret Ani on Saturday, with the Belgian experiencing the pain after a sharp turn and stretch.

She went on to win the match 6-4 6-2, but injured sesamoid bones in her left big toe in the process.

After learning that Clijsters had also torn a muscle in her foot, her fitness trainer Sam Verslegers said: “Roland-Garros? Kim might be fit in time but we won’t be taking any risks.

“We’ll be working to return a step at a time so right now it’s difficult to put a timeline on when she will return to action.”

Belgium went on to win the tie 3-2 to ensure their return to the World Group in 2011. Roland Garros begins on May 23.
