The 21-year-old fifth seed was outplayed in the first set and the match looked to be over when Ferrer, the world number 13, went 40-30 up serving for the match at 5-4.

But Chardy somehow managed to break serve and claimed the second set following an enthralling tie-break. The third set also went to a tie-break, with Chardy holding his nerve to clinch victory in two hours and 34 minutes.

He will now play fellow countryman Tsonga in Sunday’s final after the top seed eased past Portugal’s Frederico Gil 6-3 6-4.
