World No.1 doubles duo Bob and Mike Bryan were given a scare by Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner but survived to win their opening Group A clash at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.
The American twins had to save a match point at 7-6 5-4 down but recovered to clinch victory on the championship tiebreak.
Their Austro-German opponents looked set to cause an upset for much of the encounter and were aided by their dominant serving, striking six aces to one from the Bryan Brothers and keeping their composure by hitting no double faults to three from the world No.1s.
But the Bryans, who defeated Melzer and Petzschner in the group stages at last year’s tournament but were defeated by eventual champions Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic in the semi-finals, stormed back to win 6-7(4), 7-5, 10-7 in an enthralling tie that saw Bob Bryan strike a remarkable lobbed-tweener winner.
