Brown downs Stan for biggest scalp

Dustin Brown claimed the biggest win of his career at the BMW Open in Munich yesterday, beating second seed Stanislas Wawrinka in three sets.

The 26-year-old German – a wildcard entrant in to his home tournament – sealed a 6-7(6) 6-4 7-5 victory over the Swiss to book a second round clash with Radek Stepanek.

Brown, who reached a career-high of No.89 this January but has since slipped back to No.123, was delighted with his scalp.

“It’s unbelievable,” he said. “Stan is a great player and it wasn’t the best draw.”

Born to a Jamaican father and German mother, 6’5” Brown first played under the German flag in October 2010. He was prompted to represent a different nation due to a lack of funding and support from the Jamaican Tennis Association.

But after five first round losses in ATP Tour events this year, Brown concedes that it was about time he recorded a victory over a top player.

“If you want to do well, you have to start beating these guys. My mom has been urging me the past couple months to believe in myself and actually believe I can beat these guys. I’ve had a lot of tough losses this year against guys like Querrey and Montanes, but I really felt like I could do this today.

“Even after the first set, I still stayed in it and I’m happy I pulled through.

“It’s probably going to take a little while to sink in, but it’s great.”
