Brown claims Isner scalp in Houston

The world No.101 outlasted the American top seed to claim a 6-4 6-7(7) 7-6(4) victory at the Fayez Sarofim & Co. Men’s Clay Court Championship in Texas.

World No.9 Isner, who recently broke back into the top 10 following a run to the semi-finals in Indian Wells, saved two match points in the second-set tiebreak to force a decider, but was unable to fend off defeat after two hours and 19 minutes.

"I got a little tight but you can’t practise those things," said Brown, who double faulted on match point in the second set tiebreak. "That’s just repetition of being in these situations, in matches against these guys. I’m really happy that this time I won it.”

“It feels unbelievable,” he added. “It’s my first year in Houston and I’m really enjoying it.”

Brown, who plays most of his tennis on the Challenger circuit, enjoyed one of the biggest scalps of his career at Wimbledon last year, when he upset former champion Lleyton Hewitt to reach the third round.
