Bouchard wins WTA newcomer award

Bouchard, who ended 2012 ranked No.144, reached her first WTA final at Osaka last month to help her climb to No.32 in the world, the highest-ranked teenager in the sport.

The Canadian, who burst onto the scene by winning the Wimbledon girls’ title last year, followed up her impressive form at the All England Club with a shock win over Ana Ivanovic on Centre Court to reach the third round.

She reached the quarter-finals or better on three occasions in 2013 and claimed her first wins over Top 10 opponents Sam Stosur (Charleston) and Jelena Jankovic (Tokyo).

“I don’t want to stay at No. 32, I know I can still be a lot better,” Bouchard told the Globe and Mail. “Yes, I had a breakout year, but I expect a lot out of myself, so I didn’t surprise myself.

"I’ve been playing since I was five, and that’s a lot of time on the court and in the gym, so I’ve always known this would happen. I can’t predict what will happen next, but I know for sure I’m going to try my best.”
