The British number five came through three rounds of qualifying to secure his place in the main draw, but came up just short against the world number 38, losing 7-6 (7/5) 7-6 (7/1).

Bloomfield, 25, did not face a single break point in the match but was second best in the tie-breaks as Bolelli, who pushed Rafael Nadal all the way in Rotterdam last week, booked his place in the second round.

Bloomfield, ranked 318th in the world, has won only one of his 11 ATP Tour matches.
