Blake, who recorded 13 aces in the match, will next face Frenchman Florent Serra for a place in the quarter-finals.

Second seed Juan Martin del Potro inflicted a 7-6 (7/5) 7-6 (7/5) defeat on Andrea Stoppini of Italy and will take on Japan’s Kei Nishikori in the second round.

American wild card John Isner survived an epic first-set tie-breaker en route to a 7-6 (11/9) 6-4 victory over Ramon Delgado of Paraguay.

Another American, sixth seed Sam Querrey, was stretched by Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus before securing a second-round berth with a hard-fought 6-3 5-7 7-6 (7/5) win in just under two hours.

In Wednesday’s second-round action, Germany’s Tommy Haas beat Christophe Rochus of Belgium 6-2 7-5 in 74 minutes.

Fourth seed Radek Stepanek also advanced to the quarter-finals after defeating Chris Guccione 6-2 7-6 (7/1).
