In two even sets, Kvitova converted all five of her break points to gain the crucial upper hand against an opponent ranked 18 places higher at number 37 in the world.

She will next face fourth seed Carla Suarez Navarro after the Spaniard saw off Belarus’ Olga Govortsova 6-3 6-4.

The 21-year-old broke twice in the first set and once in the second as she powered through in one hour and 15 minutes.

Despite a first serve percentage of just 59, Suarez Navarro seized on Govortsova’s weak second serve and also converted all of her break points to reach the last eight.

Italian eighth seed Sara Errani breezed past Tatjana Malek, breaking in seven of the German’s eight service games en route to a 6-3 6-0 win.

Second seed Agnieszka Radwanska was in first-round action and eased past Monica Niculescu of Romania, winning 6-4 6-2. In a match featuring 11 breaks of serve, the Pole prevailed in 85 minutes to set up a clash with Alize Cornet.

The unseeded French player had to come from a set behind against Germany’s Kristina Barrois, serving seven aces on her way to a 4-6 6-3 6-3 victory in two hours 10 minutes.

She was joined in the round of 16 by third seed Yanina Wickmayer, the Belgian beating Switzerland’s Timea Bacsinszky 7-6 (8-6) 6-4.

Romanian youngster Alexandra Dulgheru made short work of Sybille Bammer, dropping just four games as she routed the experienced Austrian in under an hour. Dulgheru broke serve five times and dropped just 29 points in total as she cruised to a 6-3 6-1 success to set up a clash with Wickmayer.
