World number 143 Capdeville – born in the host town of Santiago but now resident in Miami – took the first set 7-5 but Brazilian Bellucci battled back to level.

He then nervelessly held serve at 4-5 to stay in the final set and claimed the crucial break before serving out a 5-7 6-4 7-5 win to set up a last-eight meeting with Eduardo Schwank.

The latter benefited from the withdrawal through injury of sixth-seeded fellow Argentinian Jose Acasuso at one set all in their second-round clash.

Acasuso took the first set after winning a tie-break 7/3 but Schwank won the second 6-2 as an injury to Acasuso’s left knee took its toll, ultimately forcing him out of the match before the deciding set could begin.

Juan Monaco won another all-Argentinian clash against Juan Ignacio Chela 6-3 7-5 in an hour and 29 minutes.

Monaco, the second seed, converted five of his seven break points to set up a quarter-final clash with Peter Luczak.

The unseeded Australian beat David Marrero of Spain in straight sets without facing a break point at any stage.

But he broke just once himself and needed a second-set tie-break to wrap up a 6-3 7-6 (7/4) win.
