Keothavong, who came into the match with a semi-final appearance at the ASB Classic in Auckland and a victory against world number 25 Agnes Szavay in Hobart under her belt, looked down and out after easily losing the first set but she responded in superb fashion to force a deciding set.

The result leaves Elena Baltacha, who plays on Tuesday, as the only British women left in the draw following defeats for Melanie South and Katie O’Brien.

South suffered a 6-2 6-4 loss to 16th seed Marion Bartoli, while Monica Niculescu inflicted a 6-4 6-4 defeat on O’Brien.

Chakvetadze will face Jelena Dokic in the second round after the Australian beat Tamira Paszek 6-2 3-6 6-4.
