Battling Keothavong bows out

Keothavong, the world number 87 and playing her first US Open this week, had caused an upset in the second round by ousting 25th seed Francseca Schiavone of Italy to become the first British woman to reach the third stage since Sara Gomer and Jo Durie in 1991.

But her surprise run in New York was halted by fifth seed Dementieva, who defeated the 24-year-old 6-3 6-4.

“She was a lot more consistent than I was,” Keothavong said of the world number five. “She’s a lot more experienced in these kinds of situations.

“You know, everyone told me her serve was a weakness but she didn’t give me one point on her serves.

“I think she served pretty well and she just played those bigger points better than me.”
