Baltacha had to be at her best to battle back from a set down and claim a 2-6 6-4 6-4 win.

She told www.lta.org.uk: “That was close one. I’ve played Cav before and she has improved so much since I last played her.”

She added: “She started so fast out of the blocks it was unbelievable and she really made me dig deep to try to get every little bit of everything I could throw at her.”

Italian Camerin beat Madison Brengle, also in three sets.

Mel South could not join compatriot Baltacha in the last four, losing 5-7 6-3 6-2 to Stefanie Voegele, who will face top seed Yanina Wickmayer.

In the men’s draw, Josh Goodall beat Edouard Roger Vasselin 2-6 6-2 7-6 (7/5) to book a place in the quarter-finals, but Alex Bogdanovic and Chris Eaton both lost.
