Cypriot Baghdatis eased through by beating German Daniel Brands 6-3 6-2 in 68 minutes as he looks to go one better than 2007 when he was beaten by Gilles Simon in the final.

Serra claimed a 6-3 6-3 win over Russian Igor Kunitsyn in 54 minutes.

Baghdatis claimed his fourth ATP World Tour title last month at the Medibank International in Sydney and started the tournament ranked at 36.

The 24-year-old next faces the winner of the clash between Frenchmen Michael Llodra and Edouard Roger-Vasselin.

Serra, making his second appearance at the Open 13, could face a second-round rematch with countryman Julien Benneteau, whom he lost to on his Marseille debut three years ago.

The eighth-seeded Benneteau faces Swiss qualifier Stephane Bohli in the first round.
