Azarenka stutters in Stuttgart

The Argentinian advanced to the third round with a 6-4 6-3 victory over her more-fancied Belarusian opponent.

Third seed Jelena Jankovic had no such problems, though, the Serbian brushing aside Dominika Cibulkova 6-1 6-1 in her first-round match.

The two other seeds in action on Wednesday, Russian duo Svetlana Kuznetsova and Nadia Petrova, found the going tough in their first-round contests but came through to win in three sets.

Fifth seed Kuznetsova was a 6-4 5-7 6-1 winner over qualifier Andrea Petkovic, while Petrova, seeded six, overcame Zheng Jie of China 6-4 5-7 6-4.

Italian Flavia Pennetta had no problem booking her place in the second round with a 6-2 6-0 win over Russia’s Anna Chakvetadze.

Slovakia’s Daniela Hantuchova was also a comfortable first-round winner as she swept aside Alize Cornet 6-3 6-1, while Sabine Lisicki defeated Patty Schnyder 6-4 6-3.
