The 23-year-old from Belarus, having made a flying start to the year that took her to the top of the rankings, has not had as much success recently but says she is still enjoying herself.

“I feel like there are more expectations from people because I don't try to put that pressure on myself,” Azarenka said at the US Open. “When I go out there I need to enjoy playing. If I start putting pressure on myself I don't enjoy myself. It's not fun for me. I’d better just go home.

“I try to just make sure that I prepare the best I can for my match and that I have that passion and desire to go on court. After that, the result for me really will take care of itself. It's going to be hard no matter what. I cannot always win. But it's important not to have a regret once you step off the court.”

As for her recent form, Azarenka said “I didn’t do so well in the French Open, but I think Grand Slams are different tournaments.  You have to make sure that you know how to pace yourself. I don't take it as a two_ѥweek event. I take it as a three_ѥweek event, because you always come a little bit earlier. It takes a long time, so it's important to make sure that you know what you do every single day, the best way you prepare for the match. Grand Slams are just very different from any other tournaments.”

Although still only 23, Azarenka has had plenty of experience on the tour, which she thinks has been of great benefit.  “I learned more about my body, what I need to push a little bit more, when I need to rest a little bit more. I feel like I have found a better balance and can adjust throughout the two weeks [of a Grand Slam] on what I have to do, how I have to practise. I think me and my team are doing a good job at finding that balance every time.”
