ATP Finals Preview: Daniil Medvedev

Daniil Medvedev is set to make his second appearance at the ATP Finals despite failing to win a title on tour so far this year.

The World No 5 started the year in disappointing fashion after exiting the Australian Open in the fourth round, losing in five sets to three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka.

The Russian struggled to find form prior to the lockdown, losing to lower-ranked opponents in Vasek Pospisil and Gilles Simon in Rotterdam and Marseille respectively.

However, following the lockdown, the World No 5 played his best tennis of the year as he reached the semi-finals of the US open before losing to the eventual winner Dominic Thiem in straight sets.

Despite finding form on the hard court, the Russian struggled yet again on clay as he was eliminated in the first round of Roland Garros for the fourth straight year after his defeat to Martin Fucsovics.

Daniil Medvedev lost to Kevin Anderson on his return to the hard courts in Vienna, though showed more promise in the Paris Masters, avenging his earlier defeat to the South African before beating Alex De Minaur, Diego Schwartzman and Milos Raonic to earn a spot in the final. He then went on to beat Alexander Zverev in 3 sets in the final finishing up in total control in a one sided 3rd set which should help him feel more confident heading to London. This was his first title of the year and came at a perfect moment in preparation for the ATP Finals.

The World No 5 will be looking to improve on his only appearance at the ATP Finals last year after losing all three of his matches against Alexander Zverev, Rafael Nadal and Stefanos Tsitsipas and winning just one set in the process.
