ATP Finals 2021 Tournament Preview

Dates

Players
The top eight players in the ATP Race to Turin compete at the year-end finals. Those players are, in order, Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev, Matteo Berrettini, Hubert Hurkacz and Casper Ruud.
Hurkacz and Ruud make their debuts in 2021, while the other six competitors have four previous champions among them.
Djokovic has five titles at the ATP Finals, while Medvedev, Zverev and Tsitsipas have one each.
Format
The eight players are split into two groups of four, with a round robin format within each group.
The top two players from each group advance to the semi-finals. The winner of Green Group players the runner-up of Red Group, and the winner Red Group faces the runner-up of Green Group.
The group stage runs from Sunday 14th to Friday 19th November. Semi-finals are on Saturday 20th and the final is held on Sunday 21st.
Match-ups
In Red Group, Medvedev kicks off proceedings against Miami Open champion Hurkacz. The two men have faced off twice on tour, both in 2021.
Hurkacz won their first encounter in the fourth round of Wimbledon, before Medvedev gained revenge at the Canadian Masters.
The order of the second set of round-robin matches has not yet been determined.
However, Zverev will face Wimbledon finalist Berrettini. It will be their second meeting in 2021, Zverev defeating the Italian in the Madrid Masters final. The German leads their head-to-head 3-1.
Medvedev and Zverev will face each other for the 11th time, tied at five wins each. Berrettini will take on Hurkacz for the first time since ousting the Pole to reach the Wimbledon final.
Finally, Berrettini has the chance to gain a first win over Medvedev, losing on two previous occasions. Meanwhile, the same is true for Hurkacz against Zverev, the Pole losing their only meeting at the 2019 Madrid Masters.
In Green Group, Djokovic first takes on Ruud. The two have met once on the ATP tour, in the semi-finals of the 2020 Rome Masters. Djokovic came out on top that day.
Tsitsipas will play Rublev in a repeat of the Monte Carlo Masters final from earlier this year. The Greek narrowly leads Rublev 4-3 in that head-to-head.
Djokovic will battle Rublev for the very first time when they meet in Turin. This is the only maiden head-to-head at the whole event in the group stage.
Ruud and Tsitsipas are tied 1-1 heading into their round robin showdown. Lastly, Djokovic and Tsitsipas meet for the first time since the Roland Garros final, while Ruud attempts to land a first win over Rublev, down 0-4.
Where is the Event held?
The ATP Finals are held at the Pala Alpitour stadium, Italy’s largest indoor sports arena, on hard courts.
Ranking Points Breakdown
Given the irregular format, the ATP Finals has its own unique ranking points system, outlined below.
Round robin match win – 200 points
Semi-final win – 400 points
Final win – 500 points
Undefeated champion – 1500 points
Prize Money Breakdown
The total prize pool for the 2021 ATP Finals is $7,250,000. That sum is split as follows:
Alternate – $93,000
Participation fee – $173,000
Round robin match win – $173,000
Semi-final win – $530,000
Final win – $1,094,000
Undefeated champion – $2,316,000
If a player does not complete all three of their round robin matches, their participation fee is distributed as follows:
One match – $86,500
Two matches – $129,750
Three matches – $173,000
