Frances Tiafoe US Open 2019

ATP Delray Beach Open preview

The ATP Delray Beach Open returns for another year. Based in Florida, this event features both hall of famers from the ATP Champions Tour and the stars of today.

Delray Beach was a clay court tournament up until 1999 but since the start of the new millennium it has been an outdoor hard court event. This year’s competition will run from February 17th – February 23rd 2020. It is a great opportunity for players to prepare for the prestigious Indian Wells and Miami tournaments which take place in March.

Former champion, Jaun Martin Del Potro is on the player lineup this year. The Argentinian’s monstrous forehand has created problems for all his opponents over the years and he is one of the most popular stars on the tour. After his US Open 2009 triumph, many thought Del Potro would go onto win more majors, but injuries have been a thorn in his side. He had a wrist injury in 2010 and 2015 and pulled out of this year’s Australian Open because of a knee problem. Del Potro has recovered from injuries before going onto win titles and Delray Beach will give him the chance to find his feet.

Milos Raonic will be aiming for his first title since 2016, the same year in which he made the finals of Wimbledon. Similar to Del Potro, Raonic has had his fair share of health troubles. In 2017, he suffered a hamstring tear and fell out of the top 20. But, Raonic has made a steady comeback and got to the quarter-finals of the 2019 Australian Open. He is ranked 35 in the world and will be a player to watch at this year’s Australian Open.

Nick Kyrgios is another exciting player who will be in the field. The 24-year-old tends to be in the media spotlight for his controversial comments and character and is viewed as someone who has the potential to be a star if he took the sport more seriously. But, the Australian has not done too bad so far in his career, winning six titles and making two Grand Slam quarter-finals. He will represent his country at the Australian Open and is their brightest hope in the men’s draw.

Home fans will not be disappointed as they will have plenty of American’s to cheer on in Delray Beach. Frances Tiafoe, the 2018 champion, will play and the legendary Bryan Brothers, who have claimed 16 grand slam doubles titles, will make an appearance.
