The 22-year-old, who is ranked 70th in the world and is yet to win an ATP title, was selected by captain Modesto Vazquez for the tie in Ostrava on July 10-12.

It is a first Davis Cup call-up for Mayer, who recently advanced to the third round at the AEGON International in Eastbourne.

The other members of the squad are world number five Juan Martin del Potro, Jose Acasuso, ranked 42, and Juan Monaco, ranked 66.

Vazquez said Del Potro was the only one of the four guaranteed a place in the singles, specifically because of the hard Taraflex surface at the indoor Cez Arena where the tie will be played.

He said: “Del Potro is the only one in the top tier, especially on the surface we’ll be playing on, as he can serve a number of aces. It is a fast surface.

“Monaco has enjoyed a very good year so far. He has a chance to play the singles, but we’ll follow his progress and see what to do.

“I cannot say who will make up the doubles pairing because I cannot reveal it to the Czechs in advance. It could be Del Potro and Acasuso, but Mayer could be a great doubles player. He has not competed too much but is a regular player.”

Argentina, who hammered Holland 5-0 in the previous round in Buenos Aires in March, are looking for their first Davis Cup crown, having lost the final in 1981, 2006 and 2008.
