Andy Murray relinquishes US Open wildcard as further withdrawal promotes him into main draw

Andy Murray has relinquished his US Open wild-card after Alexei Popyrin’s withdrawal pushed him into the main draw instead.

Murray, a former world number one before he was struck down with injury, currently sits at 129 in the rankings, meaning he will now join the field at Flushing Meadows on merit instead.

It was at the US Open where Andy Murray finally broke his Grand Slam duck, winning the 2012 final after failing twice finishing runner-up at the Australian Open in 2010 and 2011.

Popyrin, the world number 103, is believed to have followed compatriots Ashleigh Barty and Nick Kyrgios in pulling out of the US Open with safety concerns.

Rafael Nadal has already pulled out, while WTA world number two Simona Halep has suggested she may be the next big name to rule themselves out.

Kiki Bertens and Elina Svitolina, who both currently sit in the WTA top ten have also withdrawn.

ATP world number one Novak Djokovic is yet to make a decision, although reports claim he is ready to lead a boycott of the top 20 players in the world if assurances are not given over quarantine exemptions.

Murray’s wildcard, meanwhile, has gone to American world number 195 Mitchell Krueger.
