Almagro, who fell at the same stage in Buenos Aires last year, looked to be on course for round two when he took the first set on the tie-break.

But Gimeno-Traver refused to give in and stunned his countryman with a 6-7 (4/7) 7-6 (8/6) 6-3 triumph.

There were no such worries for Victor Hanescu or Frederico Gil, however.

Hanescu, the seventh seed from Romania, overcame Argentinian wild card Eduardo Schwank 6-3 7-5 while Portuguese Gil saw off Australian Peter Luczak 6-2 6-4.
