Alexander Zverev sets sights high ahead of upcoming season

World number three Alexander Zverev has outlined his aspirations for next season, feeling that “a major title would certainly not come too early.”

Following a successful season where he was the only player on the ATP tour to win two Masters 1000 events (the Cincinnati Masters and Madrid Open), as well as Olympic gold for Germany at the rescheduled 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Zverev has set his sights on climbing the ATP rankings further and winning a major title in 2022.

Last week, World number three Zverev said that he felt 2021 was a breakout season for both himself and the younger generation of players.

Although, next season he hopes he can do even better. Speaking to Bild am Sonntag, Zverev said “next year I want to move a little further [up the ATP rankings].”

“Titles and tournaments are more important, of course. But that goes hand in hand.

“You cannot become number one with just one Grand Slam title. But I’m turning 25, so a major title would certainly not come too early.”

After finishing third in the World rankings, Zverev qualified for the ATP Finals in Turin, Italy. The ATP Finals will be Zverev’s 21st tournament of the season and he has played 70 matches since January.

He has been placed in the Red group alongside World number two and US Open champion Daniil Medvedev, home talent Matteo Berrettini and World number nine Hubert Hurkacz.

The German began his ATP Finals campaign against Berrettini, but won via a walkover when the Italian withdrew after he suffered an abdominal injury. Fellow Italian Jannik Sinner could replace Berrettini as the first alternate.
